What is Spaying and Neutering?

Spaying is a form of sterilization by removing an animal's ovaries. Neutering is the removal of a dog's testicles.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and neutering have many benefits. Some of these benefits include:

  • Reduced risk of diseases. Pets who are spayed or neutered before they reach sexual maturity are at reduced risk for certain diseases of the reproductive system.
  • Eliminates chances of unwanted pet pregnancies. Spaying or neutering your pet helps control the animal population in our community and helps ensure that your household will never have to deal with an unwanted pet pregnancy.
  • Behavior control. Spaying or neutering your pet can make your pet more cooperative and less aggressive. Pets who are spayed or neutered are less likely to spray urine, yowl or behave aggressively toward others.
  • Reduced impulse to wander. Some pets who are not spayed or neutered will feel an impulse to leave home in search of a mate. This procedure can reduce this impulse.

When To Get Your Pet Spayed or Neutered

Here at Yarmouth Veterinary Center, we recommend spaying and neutering between 4 months and 6 months of age. Pets who are older can be spayed or neutered, however, pets who undergo this procedure after they have reached sexual maturity may not reap the full benefits of the surgery. Pets who are sterilized at an older age do lose the ability to reproduce, however, these pets may not experience improvements in behavior and will still be at risk for diseases of the reproductive system.
