The dental exams we do on awake patients are as thorough as possible but we cannot do a complete dental exam without general anesthesia. As a result, estimates that we give based on the awake exam are tentative and subject to revision, sometimes dramatic revision, once the patient is evaluated when asleep.
In some cases the estimate may need to be revised more than once during the procedure.
At the time of the awake exam we will determine a level of dental disease for your pet, ranging from none to small, medium, large or x-large. We use this level, combined with the cost of the dental cleaning/exam and any additional diagnostics, treatments, and medications that we require and/or that we recommend and you approve, to create the estimate.
If we have not done a recent awake exam on your pet then there will not be a dental/oral surgery item on your estimate.
At the time of check-in for your pet's dental procedure you will be asked to choose from one of three options:
1. Please do all of the necessary dental/oral surgery. You do not have to call me with a revised estimate.
2. I approve the dental cleaning/exam and dental/oral surgery up to the level indicated on my estimate. If the estimate must be revised based on the results of the anesthetized exam, please call before proceeding. I understand that you will make one attempt to contact me and that my pet will be anesthetized at the time. If I cannot be reached my pet will be recovered from anesthesia and any further dental/oral treatment will be scheduled for another time.
3. Please do nothing more than the dental cleaning/exam without contacting me first. I understand that you will make one attempt to contact me and that my pet will be anesthetized at the time. If I cannot be reached my pet will be recovered from anesthesia and any further dental/oral treatment will be scheduled for another time.
In some cases dental treatment plans are staged. (Please see the article about staging in this section.) The estimate you receive is for the single procedure about to be performed and does not include any future treatments.
