X-Rays are essential to veterinary dentistry for the same reasons they are essential to human dentistry. At Yarmouth Veterinary Center we have the best digital dental radiography equipment so that we can provide our patients with the best dental care.

General anesthesia is necessary for dental x-rays of veterinary patients.

The "gold standard" is a complete set of x-rays on each dental patient on each dental visit. When we are cleaning and examining the mouth but not planning or proceeding with dental/oral surgery, x-rays are strongly recommended but optional. Our clients are free to choose to have a dental cleaning without x-rays, but we believe we have made x-rays very affordable to encourage them to opt for this valuable procedure.

If dental/oral surgery will be performed x-rays are essential, not optional, and they are included in the cost of the procedure.

Dental x-rays allow us to properly evaluate:

  • abnormalities in tooth size, structure or number
  • periodontal disease - the extent and nature of periodontal bone loss
  • endodontic disease - the vitality of the pulp - whether or not the tooth is alive
  • acquired dental diseases - cavities and tooth resorption
  • the extent of tooth and oral trauma
  • the extent of tumors - is there bone involvement?
