Stem Cell Indications for Therapy

Stem cell therapy offers the unique combination of powerful anti-inflammatory therapy and regeneration of healthy body tissues. We believe it should be considered as part of the treatment protocol for many disorders.

Stem cell therapy has one primary problem for which it is indicated and most often used, and this is arthritis (degenerative joint disease, djd). Patients with cruciate ligament (acl) disease, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, ocd of the shoulder and ankle, and djd due to other causes are excellent candidates for stem cell therapy.

The results of clinical trials currently support the use of stem cell therapy for orthopedic conditions. Intense research, with very promising early results,  is ongoing in veterinary medicine in a wide range of other disorders, including:

  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • degenerative myelopathy (spinal cord degeneration)
  • atopy (allergic skin disease)
  • urinary incontinence
  • kidney disease
  • pancreatitis
  • diabetes
  • feline stomatitis
  • hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels)

Veterinary patients with these and other non-orthopedic problems are now being treated with stem cell therapy. If the results of preliminary screening and consultation are positive, YVC will provide stem cell therapy for patients with these and other disorders.

Co-morbidities are multiple diseases that are affecting one patient simultaneously. This is a somewhat common and frustrating situation in veterinary medicine. For example, many of our patients that have arthritis also have a co-morbidity such as skin allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, or kidney disease. Stem cell therapy offers the unique and reasonable possibility that we can have a profound positive impact on more than one illness with one mode of treatment.

There is one common problem that stem therapy is not indicated for, and that is cancer. Current research strongly indicates that stem cells will someday become a common and valuable component of cancer treatment protocols, but at this time there is not enough information to allow us to recommend this use.
