Stem Cell Services at YVC

The stem cell therapy services provided at Yarmouth Veterinary Center include initial therapy, retreatment, and stem cell banking.

Initial therapy includes surgically collecting a fat sample, processing the sample to harvest the stem cells, and administering them to the patient. Initial therapy usually takes place entirely in one day at YVC.  While this is typically the most advantageous way to begin treatment, for some patients it might be more appropriate to have MediVet process the sample. In those cases, we collect the fat sample and send the patient home, ship the sample overnight to MediVet, where it is processed and shipped back to us the following day. The patient returns to us for the administration of the stem cells.

Retreatment involves a follow-up administration of the stem cells. Whether or not re-treatment is done, and how often it is done, is determined on a case-by-case basis. Retreatment can be accomplished utilising the stem cells banked at the time of the initial therapy, or stem cells harvested from a new tissue sample.

Banking stem cells means saving some of the patient’s stem cells at MediVet’s storage facility. The cells can be safely stored for many years. The stem cells for banking are obtained from the same fat sample that is processed at the time of the initial stem cell therapy. However, they can also be obtained from a fat sample collected at any time in a patient’s life. One exciting option is collecting a fat sample at the time of routine spay or neuter, and banking the harvested cells for use later in the patient’s life.
