DIABETES IN CATS: SUMMARY OF TREATMENT
Every diabetic cat is an individual and we will create a treatment strategy that is specific to your pet's needs. The following program works well for most cats.
AT THE TIME OF DIAGNOSIS Evaluation of your cat's overall health status with laboratory tests that include complete blood count, biochemistry profile, urinalysis, urine culture, thyroid level, and pancreatitis test (Many diabetic cats have other illnesses occuring at the same time as diabetes, and if these other illnesses are not treated then diabetes will be unmanagable.)
Hospitalization for 1 day to begin insulin therapy; a blood glucose (sugar) level will be measured every three to four hours, checking for low blood sugar
Office visit to demonstrate insulin handling and injection techniques, and review dietary instructions and home monitoring of appetite, water consumption, signs of low blood sugar; review home blood glucose monitoring
THREE DAYS LATER Hospitalize for 1 day, checking blood glucose levels every 3 to 4 hours, monitoring for low blood glucose
Answer any questions regarding insulin handling and injection techniques
ONE WEEK LATER Physical exam, re-evaluating body weight and condition
Hospitalize for 1 day to repeat blood glucose tests and adjust insulin dose as needed (using same monitor that will be used at home, if you will eventually be doing blood glucose testing)
Answer any questions regarding insulin handling, injections, diet, etc.
REPEAT WEEKLY IN-HOSPITAL BLOOD GLUCOSE CURVES Until appropriately low level of blood glucose is achieved, to be confirmed 1 month later
In-hospital curves can be replaced with home blood glucose monitoring once you feel confident to do this at home
ONE MONTH LATER Hospitalize for 1 day for physical exam and blood glucose curve, adjusting insulin dose as needed
Consultation on all home aspects of management
HOME MONITORING At-home 12 hour blood glucose curve every week until stabilized, phoning or e-mailing our office with your results
THREE MONTHS LATER, AND EVERY 3 MONTHS SUBSEQUENTLY Hospitalize for 1 day for physical exam and blood glucose curve
Compare results of at-home and in-hospital blood glucose curves
Adjust insulin dose as needed
Adjust diet and other home management as needed
AT-HOME BLOOD GLUCOSE CURVE ONCE MONTHLY
OCCASIONAL REPEAT OF INITIAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
