HEARTWORM DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INTESTINAL PARASITES
We are recommending that the monthly heartworm preventive be given year-round to all of our canine patients. We feel this is the best approach for several reasons:
* Heartworm is not much of a threat in the winter months in Maine but intestinal parasites, which are also controlled by the regular administration of the heartworm preventive, can encountered by your pet at any time of year.
* We eliminate the possibility of starting prevention too late in the spring or stopping too early in the fall or winter.
* We eliminate the need for routine blood testing for heartworms.
* In the odd event your pet should have heartworms, acquired for example, prior to the start of any prevention, regular adminstration of a monthly dose of preventive should keep your pet from ever becoming ill.
If you happen to miss a dose of preventive, or you give it late, continuing the preventive after the missed dose for 12 consecutive months will eliminate any infection.
HOW DO YOU START YEAR-ROUND PARASITE PREVENTION? Our advice is to simply pick up where you left off; if your pet is due for the routine blood test this year then have it done and begin using the monthly preventive once you know the test is negative.
WE WILL PROVIDE REMINDER CALLS AND CARDS WHEN IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PICK UP MORE PREVENTIVE, SO YOU CAN PURCHASE ANY AMOUNT NOW.
